Volume one with 2 double-page and folding engraved plates, and 5 full-page plates of gardening tools and methods of grafting and pruning, volume II with 152 fine stipple-engraved plates after drawings by Pancrace Bessa, numbered I-IXLIX, with 3 bis plates, 147 of which are printed in colour and finished by hand, 2 are folding. Contemporary full green calf, gilt (a bit scuffed with some surface abrasions to the lower covers).
Second edition, first published in 1821. Noisette was an eminent French botanist and head of the botanical garden at Val-de-Grace until 1798, he later also established his own botanical garden, becoming one of the leading gardening authorities in Europe.
The beautiful plates are by Pancrace Bessa, who was an apprentice of the celebrated Pierre Joseph Redoute and of Gerard Van Spaendonck, in he turn taught the Duchess of Berry. Nissen, BBI 1451. Pritzel 6733. Catalogued by Kate Hunter
