First edition, later issue, with plates watermarked variously 1814, 1817, and 1818. “Colored plates were the fashion in valuable books at this time, and some of them appear in a History of the Wars Occasioned by the French Revolution…together with a History of the Revolution in France, by William Nicholson, LL.D., London, 1816. This work, unknown to Lowndes, is further remarkable for containing the first account, so far as we know, of the actual operation of the submarine boat, it giving a description of ‘the diving boat which at Norfolk, U.S.A., tried to destroy the Ramillies’” (Sargent, The French Revolution and Napoleon in Literature and Caricature, p. 25).
