Preface: "As the first season of the new millennium dawns the sun will rise over the foreshore, the tide will turn, duck and geese will come and go and men will try to shoot them, just as they have done for centuries. Indeed, in a few favoured places on the margins of 'civilisation' the shooter could still witness the same magical marshland scene that his ancestors saw thousands of years ago. Admittedly he must now hunt with all the encumbrances of sophisticated society draped around his shoulders and no longer depends on the meat he procures, but how important this last link with wilderness is to 21st-century man".
