COLLINS, Capt. Greenville (1643-1694). Harwich Woodbridg and Handfordwater with the Sands from the Nazeland to Hosely Bay. London: William Mount and Thomas Page, 1738.
Single sheet (20 x 23 ¼ inches, full margins with plate mark). Fine engraved map of Harwich on the East coast of England, title within a seashell cartouche and dedication within an elaborate cartouche (minor spotting, lightly toned).
THE FIRST HYDROGRAPHIC CHARTS OF GREAT BRITAIN. This map of Harwich and the mouths of the rivers Stour and Orwell as well as the Hamford Water inlet on the East coast of England was originally published in Greenville Collins' "Great Britain's Coasting Pilot Being a New Survey of the Sea Coast." The large cartouche of fish, seashells, and navigational instruments contains a dedication to “Samuell Pepys Esqr, Secretary of the Admiralty of England, President of ye Royall Society & Master of ye Trinity House of Deptford Strond.” Samuel Pepys oversaw and funded Collins’ surveying project. The dedication is dated 1686, during which Pepys served as a Member of Parliament for Harwich. Trailing to the right of the cartouche is a marine battle and below the engraver is identified as Herman Moll. Moll was employed by Greenville Collins and later became a highly influential publisher and cartographer in London.
Captain Greenville Collins was appointed to the position of His Majesty’s Hydrographer by Charles II in 1681, and was commanded to “make a survey of the sea coasts of the Kingdom by measuring all the sea coasts with their exact latitudes, the true plots of all harbours, rivers, roads, bays, creeks, islands, soundings, and the setting and flowing of tides’ which he surveyed over the course of seven years and finally published in 1693 (Hyde 2009).
