Folio (15 x 10 4/8 inches). Six fine lithographed plates in two states: one hand-coloured and one uncoloured, interleaved with contemporary tissue guards (some spotting and browning to guards). Original green paper boards, printed paper label in the centre of the front cover (rebacked tos tyle). Provenance: Later ownership inscription of Ella Cay dated 1888 on the recto of the first blank; the small bookplate of H. Bradley Martin (1906-1988), American bibliophile, on the front paste-down and chemise. First edition. Initially a cabinet-make specializing in painted furniture decorated with borders of flowers, Brookshaw appears to have abandoned this career at about the same time as he parted company with his wife and began living with Elizabeth Stanton, and under the assumed name of G. Brown (c.1794-1804). During this time he earned a living as a teacher of flower-painting and on the proceeds of his painting manuals like this one. "However, Brookshaw's most important published work, which indeed is of some botanical significance, was his finely illustrated treatise on fruit growing, the Pomona Britannica, issued in parts from 1804-when he first resumed his own name-and as a single folio volume in 1812" (Lucy Wood for DNB).
