First edition. Lithographed by Becker after the painting by Adams, who was a descendent of President John Adams, as promotional material for Anheuser-Busch. “Americans are doubtless very familiar with the Budweiser Beer lithograph (Budweiser was first brewed, incidentally, in 1876) – it hung, and hangs, in saloons nationwide. The Anheuser Busch Brewing Company acquired the original canvas, painted by Cassily Adams, in 1890 and subsequently retained F. Otto Becker to adapt the painting for lithography. Calling it ‘Custer’s Last Fight,’ Becker did indeed adapt it, among other things, by borrowing panels from other paintings and even equipping Sioux and Cheyenne warriors with Zulu-like shields. Nevertheless, Becker’s composite exemplifies the genre characterized by portrayals of ‘Custer’s last stand’” (Molyneaux, ed., p. 161). Brian Leigh Molyneaux, “The Cultural Life of Images.”
